For many of us, January means a fresh start, an opportunity to better ourselves and look towards a more radiant future. And that’s where the New Year’s resolutions come into place. However, all too often, our resolutions are too vague or simply unreachable or we go about them the wrong way. But if you’re trying to spark a positive change, you need to think about how you go about your resolutions. Keep your resolutions simple and achievable with targets. You could give yourself a time frame to achieve a target and even split your goals into several realistic targets.
Many of you will have the idea of learning a new language and sadly there are so many misleading websites and apps saying that you can learn a language in 3 months. I’ll be honest no one can become fully bilingual in the space of 3 months. It takes practice and ultimately to be fully bilingual both linguistically and culturally, you need to be fully immersed in a French-speaking country for years. However, this should not put you off getting started.
Not everyone wants or needs to become bilingual though. Not everybody has the wish to become a translator where perfection is both needed and expected. Your objective might simply be going on holiday and being able to handle a simple conversation at a café terrace. And you can always go further afterwards if you feel it’s right for you. You might want to move to France to enjoy a gentler lifestyle in the French countryside when retirement hits. You could also decide to study in France and enjoy a year abroad in one of the many universities or schools the French territory has to offer. Or then again your needs could be more professional: you are working or planning to work within a French-speaking company and you need to be able to address colleagues and clients in their native language. As you can see the reasons to want to learn French are multiple and therefore your objectives will differ. The effort and time you’ll dedicate to that new endeavour will not be the same whether you’re learning French for pleasure or you’re learning French to present a brand new marketing plan to your CEO. Therefore, the way I teach you won’t be the same either. And that’s where a private tutor who offers 1:1 tailored lessons is the ideal solution.
So, realistically, what’s your objective? What is your previous experience in French? Are you a complete beginner or did you study for the French A-level some 20 years ago? Do you have the opportunity to travel to France for leisure or work? You’re not quite sure what your starting point is? Do not fret, I can assess that for you and guide you towards your objective.
Book a no-obligation, one-off lesson now to talk through your objectives and get you started.
